ISO 22000

ISO 22000 food safety management consulting

ISO 22000 consulting helps organisations in the food chain connect hazard analysis, prerequisite programmes and food safety controls. Vosurein starts with the scope, existing processes and evidence, then helps assign responsibilities, implement the system and review it internally.

For Your Business

Who this service is for and when to start

For organisations in the food chain establishing food safety management. Start by identifying gaps if documented controls are not connected to monitoring, deviation handling, traceability and recall procedures.

The Challenge

Common challenges faced by businesses

Cleaning records, hazard analysis, and production monitoring are all complete but not interconnected, so during abnormalities, it may still be unknown which batches need isolation. Listing all control points as CCP or directly using limits from other products does not prove that the measures are suitable for this process.

Our Approach

Methods and applicable requirements

The applicable edition is ISO 22000:2018, the second edition, with Amd 1:2024. It replaces the 2005 edition. A draft international standard (DIS) is not a published new edition.

The standard combines interactive communication, management systems, prerequisite programmes and HACCP principles for organisations across the food chain. Consulting distinguishes basic hygiene, hazard controls and management responsibilities, while checking whether customers require a particular certification scheme.

The following consulting tasks can be arranged to suit your needs.

Review current practices and scope

Products, intended uses, processes, locations, outsourcing, and customer requirements.

Prerequisite programmes (PRPs)

Review hygiene, cleaning, pest control, water use, maintenance and cross-contamination controls against actual operations.

Hazard analysis

Organize raw materials, processes, hazard information, assessment criteria, and significant hazards.

Control measures and plans

Assist in determining OPRP and CCP, monitoring arrangements, and deviation handling; do not pre-fill general critical limits.

Validation and verification of control measures

Differentiate evidence of control capability, daily monitoring, and execution verification; test scope to be separately agreed.

Suppliers and Traceability

Supplier assessment, incoming acceptance, batch identification, logistics, traceability and withdrawal or recall arrangements.

Communication and Emergency Response

Food safety information, abnormal reporting, customer complaints, and incident collaboration processes.

Training and internal review

System trial, internal audit, management review, and improvement tracking.

Process

Consulting scope and process

  1. Review product processes and the food safety scope

Determine the food safety scope according to the product, intended use, and process; verify process flowcharts and raw material information on-site to identify steps or outsourced activities not covered by the data.

  2. PRP and Hazard Control Plan

Review PRP operations and hazard assessment basis, assist in distinguishing management arrangements between OPRP and CCP, allowing monitoring and deviation handling to be implemented by shift.

  3. Monitoring, Traceability, and Recall Trial

Select batches and review monitoring, isolation and release records. Trial traceability and recall procedures to check that affected products and responsible teams can be identified when a deviation occurs.

  4. Validation, verification and system review

Review responsibilities for control measure validation and verification evidence. Track findings through internal audits and management review, and assign responsibility for subsequent updates.

Preparation

What documents do companies need to prepare?

  • Product Process: Raw materials, intended use, and process flow.
  • Basic Hygiene: Cleaning, pest control, maintenance and supplier records.
  • Hazard Control: Analysis, control basis, monitoring, and deviation handling.
  • Traceability and Recall: Batch, release, verification, and drill records.

For the initial discussion, you can provide a summary. Handle customer, personal and confidential business information within the necessary scope and agreed access permissions.

Project Planning

Estimating time and cost

Product and process complexity, site, and existing hazard analysis quality will affect the schedule. Items requiring additional tests or supplier information should list waiting times first.

Food safety management consulting, product testing, shelf-life studies, equipment engineering and third-party certification are agreed separately. Schemes such as FSSC require a separate check of additional requirements and applicable editions.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is it the same as HACCP or FSSC schemes?

No. Food safety management combines hazard controls with management processes. A particular certification scheme may specify additional prerequisite programmes and other requirements, which must be checked separately.

Can existing systems and records be reused?

You can first review existing product processes, raw materials, hazard analysis, prerequisite programs, monitoring, and traceability data to confirm applicable periods, scope, and evidence quality, then fill in the gaps; the introduction does not require rewriting all documents.

What should be checked in traceability drills?

You can select batches to verify raw material sources, processes, inventory, and delivery information, ensuring that data can be linked and responsible contacts identified; after identifying gaps, processes should be corrected and re-examined.

How are consulting and third-party certification responsibilities divided?

Vosurein supports system implementation and preparation but does not issue third-party certificates. Confirm the applicable certification scheme, accreditation scope, fees and schedule separately. A certificate does not constitute product approval or proof of compliance with every regulation.

Can we copy another company’s OPRP and CCP arrangements?

Not advisable to directly apply. It should be determined based on your own materials, processes, hazard assessment, and control capabilities, as well as confirming monitoring and deviation handling arrangements.

Which version should be confirmed before implementation?

The applicable edition is ISO 22000:2018, the second edition, with Amd 1:2024. It replaces the 2005 edition. A draft international standard (DIS) is not a published new edition. Confirm the edition and transition arrangements required by customers and the assessment scheme. A standard’s publication date is separate from an organisation’s transition deadline.
