For companies that already have an environmental management system but where water conservation, carbon reduction, and climate adaptation are dispersed across different departments, guidance can be initiated during annual goal planning, expansion projects, or changes in site conditions. Initially, one plant, one water-related activity, or one climate topic can be selected to establish the management method first, then decide whether to expand.

Current parts include ISO 14002-1:2019 (general), ISO 14002-2:2023 (water), and ISO 14002-3:2026 (climate), published in August 2026. The series guides the management of environmental topics under ISO 14001. Identify each part and edition separately; a new part does not mean the whole series was revised in that year. Using this guidance does not provide an additional standalone management system certificate.

Topic Selection
First, look at activities the company can control or influence, and list the environmental conditions and data limitations at the site. Topic selection should be linked to operational needs, avoiding prioritization simply because some data are easily obtainable.
Water Management
Organize the relationships between water intake, use, and discharge, confirm data boundaries, drought/flood events, and relevant departments. Water-saving plans need to simultaneously check process quality, reuse limitations, and maintenance responsibilities.
Climate Management
Plan emissions reductions and responses to climate impacts separately, then check for conflicts between them. Emissions inventory data, site information and scenario analysis can provide inputs. Agree methods for specialist calculations separately.
System Integration
Connect work on each topic to existing environmental objectives, operational controls and review meetings. Record the reasons for decisions so the work can continue through staff changes or site expansion.

What documents do companies need to prepare?
- Site and activities: Site location, main processes, and activities that can be controlled or influenced.
- Water and climate data: Summaries of water intake and discharge, energy use and emissions, and existing site risk data.
- Systems and objectives: Environmental aspects, objectives, procedures and management meeting records.
- Measures and responsibilities: Existing improvement projects, facility maintenance and departmental responsibilities.
An index or summary is enough for an initial discussion. Before sharing personal data, confidential contract information or system records, agree on access authorisation, redaction and retention.
Project Planning
Estimating time and cost
The scope depends on the number of standard parts covered, site differences, data completeness and the number of on-site discussions. Specialist water assessments, climate modelling or engineering design are agreed separately from management system consulting. Collecting data and improving facilities may take longer than preparing documents.

Frequently asked questions
Do we have to handle water and climate at the same time?
Not necessarily. You can first select the topic with the greatest management need and clearly record its boundaries; whether to include other topics will be determined based on operational risk and resources.
Can ISO 14002 replace ISO 14001?
No. ISO 14002 provides guidance for specific environmental topics. Management system certification still follows the applicable ISO 14001 requirements and assessment arrangements.
Can we start only with carbon inventory data?
It can serve as a starting point for climate mitigation work, but activities, responsibilities, and management measures still need to be organized; data on climate impacts at the site also need to be separately confirmed.
Does lower water use mean lower water risk?
It cannot be determined directly. It is necessary to understand the water sources, site conditions, and operational needs, and to confirm whether it is just a change in output.
Can existing environmental procedures be reused?
Yes. Map work on each topic to existing procedures, then fill gaps in responsibilities and evidence. A separate system is not needed for each part of the standard.
Will a climate financial model be provided?
This service covers the management of environmental topics. If scenario calculations, financial quantification or engineering analysis are needed, agree on the input data, methods and deliverables separately.
