ISO 50005:2021 provides phased energy management guidance, including twelve core elements, each with four levels of maturity. It is consistent with ISO 50001:2018 but does not cover all its requirements; maturity improvement does not equate to obtaining ISO 50001 certification.

Review existing practices and evidence for each element. Distinguish work already carried out consistently from planned activities, rather than relying only on a contact person to complete a self-assessment.
Choose the implementation phase
Set the work for the current period according to enterprise goals and resources, prioritize gaps that hinder analysis or execution, and reserve arrangements for the next period.
Pilot the system
Establish recording habits from appropriate energy use or sites, check whether measurement, responsibility, and abnormal reporting can be sustained.
Progress towards ISO 50001
Review maturity and actual improvements. If further pursuing ISO 50001, additionally compare with requirements and evidence not yet covered.

Frequently asked questions
Do four maturity levels mean four consulting sessions?
No. Maturity levels assess individual elements. The four phases shown on this page describe our consulting process and do not correspond directly to those levels.
Does reaching the highest level meet ISO 50001?
It cannot be determined this way. This guideline does not cover all the requirements of the main standard, and a gap analysis is still needed.
Can a small company start without dedicated energy management staff?
You can first arrange a scope that can be undertaken, but there still needs to be a responsible contact point and managerial support; it cannot be done entirely without internal involvement.
Do all elements need to improve simultaneously?
You can plan the order according to the current situation, and pay attention to dependencies among elements to avoid only choosing work that is easy to score.
Can we pilot this at just one plant?
Yes, the scope and data must be clear; when promoting to other sites, re-check differences in energy usage.
Will a maturity certificate be provided?
The deliverables are an assessment and improvement plan. A maturity assessment is not a management system certification.
