ISO 14001
ISO 14001 environmental management consulting
ISO 14001 consulting helps organisations manage environmental responsibilities across sites, resource use, emissions and suppliers. Vosurein starts with the scope, existing processes and records, then helps assign responsibilities, implement controls and review progress internally.
For Your Business
Who this service is for and when to start
Manufacturers, logistics providers, service businesses and other organisations can begin implementation when opening sites, changing processes, responding to customer requests for evidence of environmental management, or bringing scattered environmental work into one system.
Organisations using the 2015 edition can first compare their existing system with the 2026 edition and confirm certification arrangements. Existing permits, monitoring data and improvement records provide a starting point; replacing every document is not the first step.
The Challenge
Common challenges faced by businesses
Environmental records are often spread across facilities teams, procurement and contractors. Site changes may not be reflected in assessments of environmental aspects and compliance obligations. For example, new equipment can change resource use and waste types, requiring adjustments to existing controls.
Another issue is that the goal only looks at the decline in total volume, ignoring changes in output or activities. To assess the effectiveness of improvement, it is necessary to confirm the scope of the indicators, data quality, and comparison criteria.
Our Approach
Methods and applicable requirements
ISO 14001:2026 is the fourth edition, published in April 2026. It replaces ISO 14001:2015 and its 2024 amendment. It sets requirements and guidance for an environmental management system, rather than a single emissions limit, and does not replace statutory permits. Confirm the transition deadline for an existing certificate with the relevant certification body.
Environmental aspects and compliance obligations
Review potential environmental impacts from activities, products and services, assessing significance alongside what the organisation can control or influence. Consulting links applicable obligations to their sources and responsible staff, so the legal register remains useful and up to date.
Operational control and change
Define procurement, process, contractor and emergency controls around significant environmental aspects. When considering life-cycle stages, account for what the organisation can influence. Implementing the system does not automatically require a full life-cycle assessment of every product.
Environmental Goals and Performance
Set objectives supported by baseline data, with clear measurement boundaries, periods and influencing factors. Include monitoring results, incidents, compliance evaluations and improvement progress in management reviews, so resources and actions can be assigned to each objective.
Process
Consulting scope and process
Confirm activities and environmental impacts
Review sites, activities, products and services to identify environmental aspects, applicable obligations and gaps in the existing system.
Define controls and objectives
Assign operational, procurement, contractor and emergency response responsibilities for priority issues. Confirm monitoring methods and environmental objectives.
Implement on-site management
Check records, training and incident handling against actual operations, keeping the system aligned with changes on site.
Evaluate performance and prepare for the new edition
Review internal audits, management reviews and improvement progress. For an existing system, also confirm whether gaps against the new edition have been closed.
Preparation
What documents do companies need to prepare?
- Activities and sites: A summary of sites, processes, products, services and contractor activities.
- Environment and Obligations: Environmental aspects, applicable permits, a register of obligations and supporting records.
- Resource use and monitoring: Energy, water, waste, and related monitoring and testing data.
- Controls and improvement: Operating procedures, emergency drills, incidents, and improvement records.
For an initial discussion, provide a summary or de-identified sample. Share full records under the agreed scope, access permissions and confidentiality arrangements. Check whether existing records are still valid before filling gaps; there is no assumption that every document must be rewritten.
Project Planning
Estimating time and cost
The assessment considers the complexity of sites, processes and contractor activities, and whether records of environmental aspects and compliance obligations are complete. Transitioning to a new edition differs from first-time implementation. Schedule additional testing, equipment improvements or permit amendments separately from management system work.
Each project specifies the number of on-site interviews, document revisions, training sessions, internal-audit support activities and improvement reviews, together with responsibilities. Third-party certification, specialist testing, engineering and legal services are not included in consulting fees by default. Confirm transition schedules for existing certificates with the certification body.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
If you already have an environmental permit, do you still need a system?
Permits are one requirement for specific activities. The management system must also connect responsibilities, changes, monitoring and improvement. Management system certification does not replace statutory permits or testing.
Has the 2026 edition been officially released?
Yes. ISO 14001:2026 is the fourth edition, published in April 2026. Compare an existing 2015 system against the published new edition, and confirm certificate transition arrangements with the certification body.
Is it necessary to conduct a complete lifecycle assessment for every product?
A life-cycle perspective does not automatically require a full LCA project. Consulting first identifies the relevant product and service stages and the activities the organisation can control or influence, then determines the data and management methods needed.
Can environmental management and carbon inventory be done together?
Some responsibility and usage data can be shared, but carbon inventory still has independent boundaries, emission factors, and calculation requirements. Environmental management system implementation does not automatically complete carbon inventory or verification.
Do we still need to manage environmental work carried out by contractors?
Yes. Confirm each party’s responsibilities, applicable conditions and required evidence. Outsourced work can still affect the organisation’s environmental performance, so it needs appropriate communication and controls.
Does completing consulting guarantee a certificate?
No certificate is issued automatically. Vosurein helps establish and pilot the system and review evidence. An independent third party assesses and issues certificates under its applicable scheme. Before applying, check the certification scope, accreditation status and customer acceptance. We do not guarantee certification or fabricate records.
